Although it is always best to consume everything in moderation, sometimes you have a few too many drinks and find yourself experiencing some terrible next-day consequences.

When you’re hung over, you may experience a variety of unpleasant symptoms ranging from headaches to nausea to digestive issues.

Hangovers can also impact your overall mood and energy levels, making it difficult to go about your day.

Thankfully, there are all-natural solutions to help soothe that painful hangover.

If you have any questions about naturopathic solutions to your everyday problems, consider contacting a naturopathic doctor in Toronto for more information.

But in the meantime, let’s get some hangover myths out of the way. You can also watch the video on natural remedies for your pesky hangover.

Who Can Handle Their Alcohol Better?

It’s often debated whether men or women can handle their alcohol better.

Unfortunately for all you ladies out there, the answer is men.

Women have less body water content, so the alcohol is much more concentrated, meaning women typically feel drunker after consuming smaller quantities of alcohol.

Also, women have a lower amount of the stomach enzyme that breaks down alcohol, so it takes more time for the alcohol to be processed out of your system.

People of all sexes should be mindful of drinking lots of water when consuming alcohol, and doing so in moderation – but it’s important to know women typically have a lower tolerance.

Avoid Acetaminophen

One of the big hangover myths is you should take acetaminophen, or Tylenol, before drinking to help avoid a hangover.

This is actually a very bad idea, and may end up damaging your liver.

Both acetaminophen and alcohol cause a lot of work for your liver, so you don’t want to consume them at the same time.

When you’re hung over and suffering from a headache, it’s typically because you’re dehydrated.

Drink lots of water before, during, and after alcohol consumption, and if you’re still suffering, you can consider taking an Aspirin.

But never, never take acetaminophen.

Best Ways To Get Rid Of A Hangover

Now that we’ve squashed some hangover myths, let’s get to the good stuff: what are the best ways to get rid of a hangover that actually work?

1. Night-Before Foods

Everyone knows never to drink on an empty stomach.

However, you can save your future self a lot of pain by eating the right foods before consuming alcohol.

Healthy fats are the best thing to snack on because they make your blood absorb alcohol more slowly.

Some great sources of healthy fats are fish, fish oil, avocado, and nuts – so consider some guacamole before your big night out.

Prickly pear is another good food to keep an eye out for at the grocery store because it helps your body break down alcohol faster.

And, of course, you should drink lots of water beforehand to stay properly hydrated.

2. Morning-After Foods

The foods you eat after drinking can be just as beneficial as the foods you eat beforehand.

Eggs are a great morning-after meal because they are high in protein and cysteine, the latter of which is crucial for detoxification and protein synthesis.

Bananas and unsweetened fruit juice are also a smart choice, as they are high in electrolytes and other vitamins.

Asparagus and coconut are very high in minerals and will help your body break down alcohol faster.

3. Intravenous Infusion

One of the biggest (and most effective) new hangover solutions is intravenous infusion, or IV therapy.

You may have read about this treatment online or seen it offered at a local clinic, because it is rapidly growing in popularity.

By delivering vitamins and minerals directly into your blood via IV infusion, you will feel the benefits immediately.

Vitamins regularly used in this kind of treatment include vitamin B, zinc, selenium, vitamin C, and electrolytes.

It is incredibly effective and fast-acting, so if you want quick relief from your pesky hangover, this may be the solution for you.

Here at the Liberty Clinic, we offer intravenous infusion therapy. If you’re curious and want more information, book an appointment and let’s talk.

4. General Vitamins For Hangovers

If you’re looking to beef up your medicine cabinet with supplements to aid future hangovers, here are some good options.

N-acetyl cysteine, or NAC, is a supplemental form of cysteine (the amino acid found in eggs).

NAC helps your body build and replenish antioxidants, which play the important role of protecting your cells from damage.

Milk thistle and globe artichoke, which is actually a species of thistle, are great at clearing your body of alcohol.
