Infections are a regular part of life. You’d be hard pressed to find someone who hasn’t had to deal with one at some point.

Some are fairly minor. The common cold, folliculitis, and some types of warts, for example, are all common infectious diseases which, although troubling, are generally not considered life threatening in most cases (there are exceptions).

However, other infectious diseases run the gamut of the “scary” conditions you’ve heard about in recent years.
What can you do about these diseases?

Infections A To Z

There are a number of reasons why you may be susceptible to infections.

There is a genetic factor, for starters.

Genetic disorders like homozygous sickle cell anemia, for example, can leave you more susceptible to certain types of infections than others (heterozygous sickle cell anemia, on the other hand, can improve your resistance).

Nutrition plays an important role as well. Deficiency in vitamin A, for example, will impair your immune system’s function when it comes to protecting you from these disorders through diminished function of neutrophils, macrophages, and adaptive immunity.

Interestingly, social influences can help us fight off infectious diseases as well.

The more people we have in our social circles, the higher the likelihood is that we’ll be exposed to one of these diseases; social support seems to play a role in our ability to fight them.

The reason for this isn’t entirely clear, but instrumental support (e.g. help with tasks) and emotional support both seem to be critical.

Other factors may include the health of your gut microbiome (types of bacteria) and the presence of various levels of stress in your life.

Dr. JJ will help you understand your various risk factors and provide you with a treatment and care plan designed to increase your resistance to infectious diseases.

Naturopathic Treatment For Infections

In some cases, an infectious disease will stay in your body for the rest of your life, for example HPV, herpes, and hepatitis B.

In these cases, it is sometimes possible to keep them dormant with the right support of your immune system.

This may help you manage the symptoms of your infection and allow you to enjoy life more easily.

In other cases, infections may be treated with naturopathic means.

Dr. JJ offers naturopathic solutions for some of the most common infectious diseases.  For some infections, naturopathic medicine may be a co-treatment along with medications, e.g. antibiotics.  For others, it may treat the infectious organism directly or support your immune system to combat the organism. Naturopathic medicine may help with some of these infections:

  • Virus infections, e.g. Influenza, EBV, CMV
  • Bacterial infections, e.g. staph, strep
  • Otitis media (OM) (ear infections – most commonly “serous OM” in kids)
  • UTIs (urinary tract infections) and cystitis
  • Bacterial vaginosis, chronic vaginitis (yeast infections), GBS
  • H. Pylori
  • C difficile
  • Parasites, e.g. worms, amoebas, B. hominis
  • Traveler’s diarrhea
  • And more
