The Benefits Of Plants In Your Home | Dr. JJ Dugoua, ND | Naturopathic Doctor in Toronto

Everyone has different ways of making their home feel more, well, home-y.

For some it’s having lots of artwork on the walls.

Others prefer shelves and shelves of books, and a cozy reading nook.

Some people fill their home with pets, and love adopting and taking care of animals.

One easy way of making your space your own, which also provides a variety of benefits at the same time, is having plants.

Today we are going to look at the benefits of having plants, and how they can help you as natural detox solutions.

Read on to learn more, or watch the video on the benefits of plants in your home which accompanies this article if you prefer.

What Are The Benefits Of Having Plants In Your Home?

Having plants in one’s home can provide a variety of benefits.

First and foremost, they look good – healthy plants are visually appealing, and many people feel that having a “living home” with lots of plants can bring about a feeling of being out in nature, as opposed to a home with no plants.

Having plants gives you something to look out for, and care for besides yourself.

Finally Plants purify the air and increase air quality.

NASA And Plants In Your Home

In the 1980s, NASA studied several different species of plants to determine which ones would be best to bring to the space station to purify the air on the space station. They studied which species were the best at cleaning and replenishing the oxygen in the air.

The final report for the Interior Landscape Plants for Indoor Air Pollution Abatement looked at the ability of various plant to remove benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene from the air.

Do Plants Improve Air Quality?

Plants can provide a noticeable difference in air quality, vs locations free of plants.

People have said that the air quality in places with a lot of plants, or features such as “living walls” is noticeably better than in places without such features.

For the maximum effect, having just one plant in your home isn’t enough – it is recommended to have one plant per 100 square feet.

Which Plants Are Good For Which Impurities?

There are different plants which are ideal for removing various types of impurities from the air

Plants which can be used to remove formaldehyde from the air include:

● Pothos
● Epipremnum
● Peace Lilly
● Boston Fern
● English Ivy
● Weeping Fig
● Snake plant

Another substance which may be found in the home is benzene.

Gerbera daisies and mums are plants which will help remove benzene from the air.

What Happens When Your Plant Absorbs Impurities?

You may be thinking “it’s great that plants can help improve the health of my home by removing chemicals from the air – but what does it do to the plant?”.

Fear not – exposure to these substances is actually helpful for the plants, who break down chemicals
and deposit them into the soil.

From there, microorganisms in the soil break down the chemicals even further, and then the plant can re-absorb the chemicals, which at this stage are now beneficial to the plant.

Pretty cool, huh?

Benzene And Formaldehyde

You may be reading this and thinking “Benzene? Formaldehyde? I don’t need to worry about those things in my home… do I?”

Benzene, as it happens, is found in petroleum products.

It can be found in car exhaust, paints and paint removers, glue, ink, rubber, and more.

Formaldehyde can be found in carpeting, as well as in your sofa.

Additionally, many textile products such as clothing, bed linens, and pillows are treated with formaldehyde.

A study in the US showed as many as 90 to 100 percent of Americans have these chemicals within their bodily tissue.
